An Empty Space at the Table

After the sudden death of my brother-in-law recently, I wrote this poem.

An empty space at the table.

Setting for 6 not 7 this year.

An empty space at the table.

No more can we share

the love, the laughter, the…

An empty space at the table.

Where are you sitting this year?

Is there a table in heaven?

Where you share Christmas cheer

with loved ones passed.

An empty space at the table.

Taken so sudden and soon.

Gone but not forgotten,

minds filling with memories

since the news that afternoon.

An empty space at the table.

Cannot take it in.

You are no longer with us,

you will not see them grow,

sharing their hearts with others, although…

your love inside remains.

It lives in each one of us.

We know you held us dear

And while we keep on living,

in our minds we keep you near.
